Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 11th to 13th century CE. A leaded bronze processional cross with four thick arms presented atop a slender shaft. The arms flare outward and terminate with disc-shaped attachments on each corner. At the center of the cross and at the end of each arm are raised circles. Processional crosses like this example would be mounted atop slender wooden poles for all to witness during religious, military, and even imperial processions. The surface has developed a nice green patina over the ages! Size: 6.125" L x 3.5" W (15.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
