Description:

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Horse Medicine - Broken Dreams" watercolor and gouache on paper, 2013. Signed at bottom right. This composition features two paintings by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that float upon a backdrop painted to resemble buffalo hide in a deep acrylic shadowbox frame. Halsey-Dutton has decribed the theme of this painting as follows, "An ideal dream life is recalled in this artwork. A horse dance stick, or horse medicine, is superimposed over other Native American art inspired references to the horse. From petroglyphs, to winter count, to ledger art, the horse played a vital role in the Plains Indian way of life. A partial dream catcher in the top painting symbolizes that this way of life is now a broken dream." Size (paintings including space between): 18" L x 11" W (45.7 cm x 27.9 cm) Size (shadowbox): 22.4" L x 15.375" W x 2.7" D (56.9 cm x 39.1 cm x 6.9 cm)

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures where she resides as well as their history. She uses shadowbox framing to underscore the cultural importance of the Native American theme and suggest a treasured museum artifact. This piece is painted on heavy-weight archival watercolor paper, and the manner of paint application was intended to convey age and weathering. In addition, the paper's deckled edge further imbues the piece with a sense of history.
