Description:

South Asia, Southeast India, ca. late 18th to mid-19th century CE. A superb and bizarre wood state of an incarnation of the deity Shiva with an Odia (Oriya) inscription, which is translated on the modern plaque added to the display base which reads "The Lord Ishwara (Shiva) Assumed a Terrifying Form." Included are a series of letters between Stella Kramrisch, celebrated art historian and 1970 curator of Indian Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and other experts discussing the translation and iconography of this piece: possibly a form of Narasimha or a two headed Sharabha, a lion hybrid incarnation of Shiva. Size: 14" L x 6.5" W x 20" H (35.6 cm x 16.5 cm x 50.8 cm); 23" H (58.4 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Old losses to fingers and abrasions / chips. Newer loss to elephant head on arch. Arms are reattached and have break lines and fissures near elbows / shoulders. Great patina throughout and painted details. Included are copies of letters / correspondences and documents regarding this carving dated 1970 from Curator of Indian Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
