Description:

Roman, late Imperial period, ca. 4th century CE. A lovely jar of a squat form, free-blown from translucent blue-green glass with a slightly concave base and a smooth pontil scar. The globular body tapers to an indented neck line, and a pair of applied sapphire-hued trail handles join the rounded shoulder to the collared rim. The elegant composition is further embellished with zigzagging trails of dark-blue glass along the lower body which is topped with a horizontal trail on top. Bright silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence envelop the vessel in fiery colors. Size: 3.75" W x 3.4" H (9.5 cm x 8.6 cm).

For a stylistically-similar example made from yellow-green glass, please see "Solid Liquid: Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic Glass." Fortuna Fine Arts, Ltd., New York, 1999, p. 95, fig. 175.

  • Condition: One long but stable hairline fissure along lower rim, with minor abrasions to body and base, light weathering film, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. A rough pontil scar indicates this vessel was free-blown. Nice earthen deposits as well as great silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
