Description:

Classical World, Central Italy, Etruria, ca. 768 to 264 BCE. A wheel-thrown ceramic kantharos meant for consuming wine. This vessel is defined by a wide body with a flared rim, a pair of high handles, and a deep basin, all atop a diminutive circular foot. The entire vessel is highly-burnished and covered in lustrous black glaze. Bucchero is a specifically-Etruscan style for firing pottery which results in a smooth, shiny finish. This type of vessel may have been buried with offerings in the tombs of a recently-deceased individual, as was the vase for much fine Etruscan pottery. Size: 6" W x 2.9" H (15.2 cm x 7.4 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private German collection, acquired in the 1950s & 1960s
