Description:

**Originally Listed At $350**

Northern Europe, Viking culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A collection of five beautiful hair rings made from coiled 67% gold and 30% silver wires. Made to be woven through the hair or through a beard, each would have sparkled in the sunlight when worn. The Vikings were known for their ornament and beauty. A 13th century English chronicler complained of the Vikings, "[They] made themselves too acceptable to English women by their elegant manners and their care of their person. They combed their hair daily... and took a bath every Saturday, and even changed their clothes frequently, and improved the beauty of their bodies with many such trifles, by which means they undermined the chastity of [English] wives." Size of largest: 0.7" W (1.8 cm); total weight of all: 8 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Neil Phillips collection, New York, USA, 1990s
