Description:

Indonesia, Bali, ca. early 20th century CE. A dramatic dance mask depicting a demon, probably the Balinese Rangda, a demon queen of the leyaks. This mask presents a fittingly frightful visage, finely carved and boldly painted with a stark white complexion, fearsome bulging eyes, a wide nose with flaring nostrils, a wide open mouth with bright red lips, prominent teeth, and intimidating fangs, and large attached ears with perforations for suspending ear ornaments. Most striking, all details are painted in saturated red, black, and gold hues making for a dramatic contrast. Eye slits were carved for the wearer. Size: 8.5" W x 8" H (21.6 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL.
