Southwest Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large hand-carved wooden festival mask, the lower jaw is separate with an iron bar / loop to operate the articulating mouth. This impressive head was used in the Barong and Calonarang dances, in village ceremonies or processions, usually 2 dancers wore the costume, with the front person operating the head and mouth. The visage is quite dramatic with bulging eyes, rounded cheeks, and grinning mouth and the surface is brightly painted with green, red, yellow, blue, and white. Barong Ket, also known as Basnapati Rajah, is sometimes described as a combination of a lion and a tiger. He is the most important protection mask of the Barongs and is also the keeper of White Magic, whose eternal enemy is Rangda.
