Lot 87
Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A special Buddha statue beautifully carved from wood seated in a classic meditative pose with legs in lotus position and hands displaying the earth witness mudra atop an integral throne or pedestal, all enveloped in lustrous, high-quality gilding. The Buddha possesses a tranquil expression with downcast eyes and a triangular visage traditional of the Shan period, all crowned by a flaming ushnisha - symbolizing the power of his enlightenment - and flanked by elongated ears that touch his shoulders signifying his renunciation of materialistic wealth. Size of Buddha: 4.5" L x 10" W x 18" H (11.4 cm x 25.4 cm x 45.7 cm); of frame: 23" W x 32" H (58.4 cm x 81.3 cm)
The Buddha displays the Calling Earth to Witness mudra, also known as Subduing Mara or Bhumisparsa representing the moment just prior to enlightenment, with the Buddha sitting in meditation, his left hand in his lap with palm upright, and his right hand palm downward touching the earth. At the moment just before Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment, the demon Mara viciously attacked him with his troops of monsters attempting to scare him away from his seat under the bodhi tree. However, the Buddha-to-be remained. Mara claimed that his spiritual deeds were greater than Siddharthas challenging the Buddha-to-be. Then Siddhartha extended his right hand to touch the earth, Mara disappeared, and Siddhartha achieved enlightenment.
