Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2500 to 2000 BCE. An exemplary leaded bronze pitcher presenting a discoid foot, a short, cylindrical leg, a tear-drop form body, a narrow neck, and a spout in the shape of a bull's head. Enveloped in a rich russet and seafoam green patina, this ancient vessel is skillfully decorated with several horizontal registers of intricate, abstract designs, including petaloid forms, curvilinear striations, and geometric motifs. The fun bull's head spout features curved horns and petite ears, while the back displays a flat rim that flares upwards. Its long snout narrows at the end, so that one may pour liquid from this eccentric pitcher. A remarkable example from ancient Bactrian culture! Size: 3" W x 6.5" H (7.6 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection bequeathed from Joel Malter collection, California, USA, before 2004
