Description:

Central Asia, Bactria-Margiana, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A distinguished copper alloy stamp seal with a long flat stem and twin bird-form terminal, which produces a cross of equal sized arms with raised ridges in the central recessed areas. A petite suspension hole just below the birds allows this lovely tool to be worn as a pendant. Bactrian items like this are sometimes known as "compartmented" seals, and were cast both in geometric (like this one) and figural patterns; they are distinctive to this region. A fascinating example from the beginning of human civilization! Size: 2.25" L x 2.25" W x 2.125" H (5.7 cm x 5.7 cm x 5.4 cm) Size: 3.125" L x 2.625" W (7.9 cm x 6.7 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand.
