Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2500 to 2250 BCE. A nice example of an oil lamp that is hand-carved from banded alabaster exhibiting attractive yellow and white hues. The cylindrical body has a shallow oil receptacle atop the shoulder that is covered by a lid with a central hole through which a wick was placed. The surfaces of the body and lid have developed smooth textures that create a pleasing tactile experience. Size (body): 1.6258" W x 3.75" H (4.1 cm x 9.5 cm); (lid): 1.9" W x 0.625" H (4.8 cm x 1.6 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany

Both lid and vessel have heavy calcifications and encrustations within their cavities, with minor abrasions and nicks to exterior surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and smooth surface textures throughout.
