Description:

Northern Peru, Chimu / Chancay culture, ca 1000 to 1300 CE. Dolls such as these must have been treasured by young girls of ancient Peru in the same way a Barbie or an "American Girl" doll would be treasured by the girls of today. Made of various pieces of fabric, possibly leftover from textiles worn by "grownups," then embellished with eyes, nose and mouth. The fabric was then placed over a reed body which was then finished with the addition of hair, hands, feet, fingers and toes. This example is NOT one of those you might find on eBay for $50 that was made last year to sell to tourists. This example truly was made almost 1000 years ago and has not been altered in the years since. 12"L x 4-1/2"W. Provenance: Ex-private Oregon collection acquired prior to 1960. The starting price is the lowest price at which this item can sell.
