Description:

Prehistoric, Miocene to Pliocene period, ca. 28 to 1.5 million years ago. A beautifully polished megalodon tooth that has collected a rounded patch of coral on the root area of the tooth from when it sat at the bottom of the ocean. The tooth is polished to have a smooth surface that is pleasantly tactile and enhances the glittering patch of pyrite near the tooth tip on both front and back sides. This is stellar example of what the forces of nature and the processes of fossilization can do. Megalodons were among the largest predators the ocean ever saw, but their teeth are the only parts that have survived since their cartilage bodies could not fossilize. Size: 5.25" L x 3.5" W (13.3 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Boulder, CO collection acquired 2020; recovered by diver off the coast of Georgia, USA
