Description:

**Previously listed at 200**

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine blackware molded vessel in the form of a fish with small details for fins along the sides and scales on the tail. The face is also nicely detailed. The fish sits on a round, flaring pedestal. Rising from its back is a stirrup handle with a design of small fish on either side; a spout rises from its center, with a small, long-beaked bird - probably a heron or similar bird who makes its living by fishing - perched on the back side of the spout. A vessel like this one may have been used ceremonially for holding chicha (maize beer) and for pouring libations onto the earth or storing them in the grave. Size: 7.5" L x 2" W x 6.5" H (19 cm x 5.1 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Joan Hersey Pavao Collection, acquired in the 1970's
