Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery lekanis consisting of a shallow base and an ornate lid. The vessel displays a large, flat knob on its lid and a similarly-shaped foot which creates a wonderful symmetrical appearance. One side of the lid exhibits a 'lady of fashion,' with fugitive white pigment creating elegant ornamentation along her brow, and the other displays a large palmette surrounded by foliate motifs. Most black-glazed surfaces showcase a lovely silvery iridescence. Size: 3.3" W x 3.4" H (8.4 cm x 8.6 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private H.G. collection, Rhineland-Palatinate, acquired between 1970 and 1999
