Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful red-figure askos with a concave foot, a circular body with sharp carination, a cylindrical spout with a flared rim, and an arching strap handle with a shallow bifurcation down the middle. The upper portion of the body is finely decorated with the head of a 'lady of fashion' on either side flanked with partial palmettes. Askoi were vessels used to pour small amounts of liquids and were perhaps used to store oil for refilling oil lamps. Size: 4.9" W x 4.2" H (12.4 cm x 10.7 cm).
