Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A redware pottery bowl embellished with several registers of impressive abstract decorations in low relief around the exterior walls to the base. From top to bottom, this vessel presents registers of repeating enclosed horizontal lidded alabastrons, a quartet of lyres interspersed around projecting palmettes and teardrops, and an encircled eight-petal flower in the center. Bowls like this one were used as drinking cups, replacing the kantharos. Scholars believe that such ornate Megarian-style bowls were modeled upon the forms and designs of luxurious metal bowls. Size: 5" W x 3.2" H (12.7 cm x 8.1 cm).
