Description:

Native American, Eastern United States, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A charming wooden model of a canoe, the traditional boat for many native American tribes. The vessel has a flat keel that it rests upon. The front and back prows curve up and inward. The interior sitting area is deeply carved out and forms an ovoid shape. The exterior sides are carved with geometric motifs of circles and cross shapes. The wood has developed a nice smooth patina. While this model (or perhaps a toy) is made of solid wood, traditionally canoes from North America were constructed from lightweight bark over wooden frames. Size: 18" L x 3.875" W x 4" H (45.7 cm x 9.8 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Englewood, Colorado USA collection; ex-M. Komor Gallery, New York City, New York USA circa 1965
