Description:

North America, Southeastern/midwestern United States, ca. 1000 to 500 BP. A very large knapped stone hoe or spade of beige and grey hues, with a rounded butt and two convex faces which are flaked to form a sharp edge. The process for shaping this piece involved hitting a harder stone against the surface to flake or knap the tool into the desired form. Knapped tools had a variety of uses such as axe heads, scrapers for cleaning hides, and digging for agricultural purposes. This is a massive and well preserved example with smooth areas along the wide blade! Size: 15.75" L x 5" W (40 cm x 12.7 cm)
