Description:

Ancient Near East, Syria, Syrian Provincial, ca. 2500 to 1900 BCE. A fantastic leaded-bronze cachet seal bead with a zoomorphic creature etched into the face. The seal has a circular face with a long-eared rabbit incised into the surface. On the verso is an elongated and diamond shaped handle with a piercing through the center for suspension. Hares and rabbits were symbolic of rebirth in Ancient Syrian and Mesopotamian cultures. Stamps like this example were used to form a seal after being dipped in wax. Included is a custom putty impression of the seal. Size of stamp: 1" L x .675" W (2.5 cm x 1.7 cm); 2.375" H (6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
