Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche to Chancay, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel from ancient Peru that depicts the head of a snapping turtle as it rises from the water to catch its prey. The protruding head features 2 rows of serrated teeth as well as raised arms along the upper chest, and arching off of the egg-shaped body is a thick strap handle. Size: 3" L x 3.6" W x 5.4" H (7.6 cm x 9.1 cm x 13.7 cm)

Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s
