Description:

Ancient Near East, Syria, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. An interesting terracotta idol with a roughly-triangular body, rounded peripheries, and a pair of pierced "eyes" surrounded by thinly-incised curvilinear striations. Scholars posit that idols like this were used in the process of twining fibrous strands together to create workable material. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.95" W x 3.7" H (10 cm x 9.4 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Cf. similar objects, identified as twining pieces, in: Fortin, Michel. Syria: Land of Civilizations. Quebec, 1994, p. 183, no. 124.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
