Description:

Ancient Near East, probably Mesopotamia, ca. 5th to 3rd millennium BCE. A set of 2 hand-carved stamp seals of hemispherical form, one of a black hematite and the other of a creamy yellow-white marble. The marble stamp seal depicts a radiating sun motif while the darker seal shows a series of curved striations that are perhaps abstract ibexes. Size of largest (black): 0.72" L x 0.7" W x 0.31" H (1.8 cm x 1.8 cm x 0.8 cm)

Provenance: private Middletown, New York, USA collection; ex-Bonham's Knightsbridge, London, May 16, 2002, part of lot 321; ex-private German collection
