Description:

New World, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th century or earlier. A hefty hemispherical mortar bowl with a flat base, gradually-widening walls, a thick rim, and a deep basin for grinding. The inside of the bowl exhibits an incredibly smooth texture from countless uses, though what this particular mortar was primarily used to grind is unknown. Included is a large pestle fragment, carved from porous volcanic stone, with a gently-tapering body and a rounded lower tip. The roughness of the pestle surface, however, suggests it is not original to the mortar. Size of largest (mortar): 7.25" W x 4.5" H (18.4 cm x 11.4 cm).

  • Condition: Bowl has minor abrasions to exterior, loss to area of base and lower basin, and scattered areas of heavy encrustations. Pestle is a fragment of a larger tool, with losses to lower tip and chips to body, and nice traces of original green ground material within some pores. Pestle is likely not original to the mortar. Both items have light earthen deposits throughout.
