China, Hongshan culture, ca. 3500 BCE. This is a small stone pendant, an opaque creamy brown color, shaped into a double-headed animal whose heads curve towards each other. The Neolithic Hongshan culture is largely known to us from excavations of temples and tombs, many of which contain jade or other stone abstract animal-shaped objects like this one. Size: 2.6" W x 1.75" H (6.6 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private LA collection acquired in the 1980's.
