China, Hongshan culture, ca. 4700 to 2900 BCE. This is a small stone pendant, an opaque creamy brown color, carved to an abstract rounded figure with a drilled circular hole in one half. Also pierced for suspension on one side. The Neolithic Hongshan culture is largely known to us from excavations of temples and tombs, many of which contain jade or other stone abstract animal-shaped objects like this one. Size: 2.45" L x 1.6" W (6.2 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private LA collection acquired in the 1980's.
