Description:

Ancient Near East, Syrian Provincial, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A hand-carved steatite stamp seal of a rectangular form with a laterally drilled suspension hole. Incised on the front face is a massive eagle with feathery wings and an aquiline beak that stands atop of its ungulate prey beneath. The reverse face of the stamp seal bears a left-facing winged quadruped, perhaps a griffin, attacking a lengthy snake with sharpened claws and gaping jaws nearly biting the snake's midsection. Custom putty impressions included. Size: 1.375" L x 0.8" W (3.5 cm x 2 cm); 2.125" H (5.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
