Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Beringian / Old Bering Sea Culture, ca. 200 BCE to 1000 CE. A bilaterally barbed dart or harpoon head hand carved from whale or walrus bone and pierced on the thickest area for securing to a line. The 2 rows of notched barbs would ensure that the head planted firmly in the animal's flesh for pulling back to the boat. These types of bilateral heads are sometimes known as seal darts for hunting in open water. Size: 4.5" L x 0.75" W (11.4 cm x 1.9 cm)
