Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Yupik peoples, Thule period, ca. 1200 to 1700 CE. A whale or walrus bone open socket harpoon or spear head. The slotted mouth would have received a sharpened slate blade, and the corner notched wings would ensure it stayed firmly planted in the animal's flesh. Through the center s a drilled perforation for a line to haul the spear and prey back to the boat or shore. Great patina of a dark brown hue throughout, attesting to the age of this piece. Size: 3.5" L x 0.75" W (8.9 cm x 1.9 cm)
