Description:

**Originally Listed At $700**

Asia Minor, Anatolia peninsula, ca. 3200 to 2300 BCE. A hand-built terracotta fertility idol with a hollow, conical body, perky breasts held aloft by a single sinuous arm, and a tapered neck. The figure's abstract visage is comprised of a prominent nose, ovoid eyes with horizontal slits, and a raised headband which encircles her domed head. Fertility idols such as this were first produced in the near east as early as the 9th millennium BCE. By 6000 BCE fertility figures were found throughout the near east and made from a variety of materials - stone and terracotta being most commonly favored. In southern Anatolia, many similar sculptures were found in decorated rooms used as shrines. Some such statues were worshipped in the shrines, others perhaps left as votive offerings left by worshippers. Size: 6.125" H (15.6 cm).
