Description:

Native American, North America, Southwest Colorado, Mesa Verde, Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloan, Tularosa style, ca. 1150 to 1325 CE. The Ancient Puebloans of Mesa Verde in Southwest Colorado created handbuilt beautiful forms using a coil-and-scrape technique and adorned these with their distinct black-on-white painted designs to create pottery that remains a marvel today. This example presents a perfectly balanced symmetrical, black on white decorative program of interlocking step motifs on the interior, a large S-shaped spiral with two panels of interlocking step motifs adorning one side of the exterior wall, as well as a fretted pattern around the rim. A wonderful example from the Central Anasazi! Size: 5.375" in diameter x 2.75" H (13.7 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: Found on private land in New Mexico, USA. Purchased in 2002 from the late Ernest Best collection, Sherriff of Lea County, New Mexico, USA from 1917-1949, who later became a Texas Ranger, and sold by his great great grandson.
