Lot 170
US Southwest, southern Colorado Plateau (Four Corners region), Ancestral Pueblo/Anasazi, ca. 1325 to 1400 CE. An excellent example of beautiful pottery from one of the most important prehistoric cultures of North America! This bowl has a fantastical interior design in strong red, black, and cream of an insect with an abstract, geometric design. Fourmile polychrome is a distinctive form of White Mountain Red Ware, distinguished by its intricate decorations of glaze and white clay pigments. The motifs on the interiors of the bowls are often the focus of the center of the bowl, separated from the rest of the bowl by a band or red and a band of black; exteriors usually consist of a series of fine white lines below the rim. F-shaped hooks, like on the feet of the insect, are another strong design element for this style. This type of pottery production was concentrated in the Sierra Ancha, below the Mogollon Rim in present-day Arizona. Size: 8.15" W x 3.75" H (20.7 cm x 9.5 cm)
