Description:

Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Anamese (sometimes Annamese), ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A charming pottery wine vessel is the form of an elephant with the head of the creature at one end and the tail at the other. Sitting upon an applied, discoid foot, the ancient bottle displays a globular body, round shoulder, slender neck, and circular, flared rim. The head of the adorable animal also serves as a spout to the vessel and is positioned upward with its mouth wide open, as though letting out a loud roar. The trunk of the elephant loops above it, coiling at the end and its ears fly backwards, each beside decorative bulges that sit atop its head. Lovely vegetal and geometric designs adorn the body of the vessel, boasting hues of dark and light green. A slender tail rises at the animal's posterior, resting upon its back. Size: 5.25" in diameter x 5.25" H (13.3 cm x 13.3 cm)
