Description:

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, northwestern Iran, Amlash culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a body composed of an abstract horse standing atop four outstretched legs. The equine creature presents with a stocky body that has a flared vessel projecting from the middle of its back, and a pair of minimalist avian creatures rest atop the shoulders with plump bodies and raised tails. Faint remains of red-orange pigment suggest that this piece was at one time embellished with vibrant layers of pigment. Size: 6.75" L x 6.125" H (17.1 cm x 15.6 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

  • Condition: Repair to back right leg, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Loss to one bird head as shown. Nicks to legs, top of tail, body, head, and vessel, with light encrustations, and fading to original pigment. Nice earthen deposits throughout. TL drill holes beneath base of vessel on verso and beneath body.
