Description:

East Africa, Northwestern Kenya, Turkana culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand carved wooden fertility doll known as an Ikoku, which was made for young Turkana girls to play with. The wooden form is covered with a beaded goatskin apron, beaded neck rings, and metal chain earrings or headdress under the vegetal fiber hair. Childless girls and women would play with these dolls together to promote fertility and then pass the dolls along to their sisters once a child is born. Included is a wooden implement covered with beads, unknown purpose and origin. Size of doll: 4" W x 18" H (10.2 cm x 45.7 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection; ex-Ned Jacob Studio collection, acquired from the Maasai in the 1970s
