Description:

East Africa, Kenya, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A buffalo horn powder flask with 3 snuff containers, made from leather and horn. The horn flask has a cap made from lizard or crocodile leather, and braided leather cords with buffalo hair tassels. Two snuff jars are made from small pieces of horn with leather capping the ends, and both have leather pouches attached by cords. The last vessel is made from wood with a bone neck. Size of large horn flask: 10" L x 2.5" W (25.4 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection; ex-Ned Jacob Studio collection, acquired from the Maasai in the 1970s

  • Condition: Large horn flask lid cannot be removed, the leather is tightly sealed to the opening. Abrasions to horn, but otherwise good condition. The leather pouches attached to the snuff jars are stiff and heavily worn with patina and mineral deposits.
