West Africa, Ivory Coast, Senufo, ca. early 20th century CE. A large and impressive carved wooden helmet mask (korobla) depicting a fearsome hyena with a dramatically protruding snout, elongated pointy ears in an alert position, a wide open mouth revealing an intimidating set of fangs through which the wearer can see, and steadfast wide open eyes. This is the type of mask worn during Senufo funeral ceremonies and periods of crisis to destroy evil spirits. Painted with black and white natural pigments; also signs of attached hair of fibers. Perforations around neck for attachment to costume. Size: 16.5" L x 10.5" W x 10.25" H (41.9 cm x 26.7 cm x 26 cm)
