Description:

Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a maskette made of hand carved wood (probably cane wood) that would have been worn atop the head, with the rest of the body covered by a costume to conceal the identity of the wearer. The maskette has projections from the top of the head that look like curled antennae. The Ogoni people, living in the fertile land east of the Niger River Delta, have a long history of masquerading, despite the efforts of Christian missionaries to stop this activity. Masks like this one were used in entertaining dances. Size: 3.9" W x 8.3" H (9.9 cm x 21.1 cm)
