Africa, Mali, Malinke / Bamana peoples, early-mid 20th century CE. This is a truly striking mask, with a round face, simple geometric features, and five spikes extended from the top of the head with tufts of horse hair attached. The wood is heavy and dense. This type of mask is known as a Ntomo mask, distinguished by that high comb shape. Ntomo is one of the secret societies in this culture, associated with boys in the process of transitioning to adulthood. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a similar example. Size: 18.5" H (47 cm)
