West Africa, Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Baule, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of wooden slingshot handles intricately carved in the form of standing figures, with the spread legs serving as the attachment points for the sling. Slings were traditionally used for hunting small game, and the carved figures were not merely decorative but were believed to represent spirits or ancestors who aided the hunter and provided protection. Size of larger: 3.75" L x 2" W x 9" H (9.5 cm x 5.1 cm x 22.9 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Stable pressure fissures on the smaller figure. Left leg on larger figure is reattached with faint break line visible. Chips and abrasions to the top of the crested head. Nice patina on both.
