Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delightful cast bronze mouse, shown crouched, with its ears perked up as if listening intently for any creeping cats. The animal's legs are carefully depicted, curved under the body and the tail is curled around the back. Mice are common subjects in Roman art, each depicted with clear attention to detail, suggesting some sympathy from the Romans for the small animals. Classical writers from the Greek period associated them with fertility, with Pliny listing the mouse as the most fertile of all species, and the Romans may have used these figurines as charms. Size: 1.55" L x 0.95" W x 1" H (3.9 cm x 2.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
