Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A playful puppy, this mold-made, hollow terracotta canine lies on its side, its rear haunches raised as if about to leap up and greet its owner or perhaps another dog. Nicely detailed, its happy face with large incised ovoid eyes, a long snout with delineated nostrils and a smiling mouth; its youthful body with perky ears, pointy tail, and delineated paws. Nice manganese deposits. Size: 9" W x 5.25" H (22.9 cm x 13.3 cm)
