Description:

Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 500 to 330 BCE. A snarling lion's head cast bronze applique or buckle, its decorated face replete with details. Two bronze studs (possibly once a hook) and an iron rivet through the undecorated and concave back made the piece functional, while the lion's mane, fierce teeth, large eye, and muscular snout create the decorative form. Lions seem to have been symbols of Achaemenid royalty, as evidenced by the enormous bronze lion-weight and the lion frieze in enameled brick found in the palace at Persepolis. Size: 2" W x 1.7" H (5.1 cm x 4.3 cm)
