Description:

Ancient Near East, Tel Brak, modern day Syria, Middle Uruk Period, ca. 3700 to 3500 BCE. A highly abstract stone idol figure hand carved from a gray stone with 2 large open work loops that symbolize eyes. Tell Brak was a major Mesopotamian city in northeastern Syria, located on a trade route between the Tigris River Valley north to Anatolia, the Euphrates, and the Mediterranean Sea. The most famous building excavated at this huge site was the Temple of the Eyes, where thousands of figures made of stone with incised eyes have been found. Archaeologists believe that these idols were placed there as offerings as wide eyes meant religious attentiveness and devotion to the gods in Mesopotamian art. Size: 2.3" L x 0.5" W x 4" H (5.8 cm x 1.3 cm x 10.2 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
