Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A forged-iron axe head of streamlined form with a curved blade head, a thick neck, and an ovoid socketing shaft. The presentation of this tool exemplifies how most axe heads were perhaps used more for utilitarian purposes rather than on the field of battle. Smooth patina has formed across the surfaces of this example. Size: 7.3" L x 1.6" W x 2.125" H (18.5 cm x 4.1 cm x 5.4 cm)
