Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A forged-iron axe head of utilitarian form with a squat blade head, a sharpened edge, an ovoid socketing shaft, and a protruding hammer-like butt end. This example was almost certainly of utilitarian form given the double-sided design that could both cut and shape as well as pound and secure. Size: 5.3" L x 1" W x 2.125" H (13.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 5.4 cm)
