Description:

Northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 800 to 700 BCE. A fascinatingly-shaped mug or jug. The body has an almost symmetrical form, standing on a flared foot and with a flared rim. A strap handle joins the body in three places - low on the body, at the base of the neck, and at the rim. It splits into two, with two projections ending in rounded terminals that rise above the wide rim. Viewed from the side, the handle seems to form an ungulate with a broad rack of antlers - perhaps a male deer, often seen as a symbol of fertility in ancient cultures. The body is made of impasto, a coarse earthenware that is a precursor to Etruscan Bucchero. Size: 4.4" L x 3.6" W x 5.15" H (11.2 cm x 9.1 cm x 13.1 cm)

The Villanovans inhabited Italy during the early Iron Age, and much of what we know of them comes from excavations of cemeteries (the first at Villanova near Bologna in northern Italy) where they cremated their dead and buried them in pottery urns in a very distinctive, double-cone shape, alongside other ceramics. In the 8th century, Greek colonists arrived in the region, and began to influence Villanovan ceramics and their forms, like this example.
