Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire to Medieval Period, ca. 6th to 13th century CE. A gathering of three full and four partial crucifix fragments cast from bronze. Three small crosses have either stamped concentric circles on one face or an 'X' incised into both sides of the central body. The smallest fragment is from a large reliquary cross with a faded scene of two angelic figures. Another larger reliquary fragment displays the Virgin Mary standing behind a young Christ with Saint George near her left hand. A nearly-intact cross boasts bifurcated terminals which themselves are adorned with branching tips. The largest fragment is from a processional cross and shows a standing figure with outstretched arms beneath an encircled letter. Size of largest (processional cross): 2.375" W x 4.6" H (6 cm x 11.7 cm).
