Western Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 5th century BCE; Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Canosan, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE; Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A fine ensemble of 7 mold-formed pottery votives from across Greece and its territories. First are 3 Archaic votives: a petite female head with a tall headdress; a full-faced woman with a noduled headdress; and a standing figure painted in vibrant red pigment. Next is a Canosan female head with a centrally parted coiffure, all covered in white and red pigment. The 3 Hellenistic votives each depict female heads: 1 with softened facial features, 1 with sharp facial features including a delineated philtrum, and the last with an enormous, scalloped crown. Size of largest (standing figure): 1.3" W x 4.2" H (3.3 cm x 10.7 cm); 5.1" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: All but the largest standalone head are likely fragments from larger figures; largest head was molded as such. Each piece has abrasions, softening to finer details, encrustations, and fading to pigment where applicable, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to pigment and some facial details. Two heads and standing figure are removable from their display stands, and 3 remaining heads are not removable from their display stands.
